Naval officer Helen Coop, originally from Liverpool, served in the Western Approaches Tactical Unit (WATU) during the Second World War. Together with other members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service at the wargaming unit, she plotted students’ moves during mock submarine battles using game pieces like this one.
