On June 21,1994, Master Corporal Mark Isfeld was killed by an anti-personnel land mine. A combat engineer, Isfeld had disarmed some of the million land mines laid in Croatia.

Isfeld’s mother, Carol Isfeld, made dolls like this one for her son to distribute to Croatian children.

Since his death, Canadians have made more than 100,000 dolls using her pattern. In Isfeld’s memory, the dolls continue to be distributed to children affected by war.
